What Is Call Parking?
Call parking is a feature that places an active call into a numbered holding slot — called an orbit — that is shared across your entire phone system. Unlike standard hold, which ties a call to one extension, a parked call can be retrieved from any phone on the system by dialing the orbit retrieval code. This makes it ideal for busy offices where calls need to be picked up at a different desk, or where you need to walk away and continue the conversation from another phone.
Parking a Call (Desk Phone or Dialpad)
- While on an active call, press the Transfer button on your desk phone.
- Dial
##1to park the call in orbit slot 1. Use##2through##8for other slots. - The call is parked. Your phone returns to idle. The caller hears hold music.
- Announce the orbit number to your team — for example: "Call parked in orbit 1" — over the PA, via intercom, or verbally.
Always announce the orbit number immediately after parking. If a colleague does not know which orbit to dial, the call will sit in the queue until it times out and recalls.
Retrieving a Parked Call
- From any phone on the system, pick up the handset or activate the speaker.
- Dial
*1to retrieve the call from orbit 1. Use*2through*8to match the orbit number used when parking. - You are now connected to the caller.
The retrieval code matches the orbit number: park to ##3, retrieve with *3. This applies to all eight orbit slots.

BLF Park Keys on Desk Phones
If your desk phone has programmable line keys, DVGVoIP can configure BLF (Busy Lamp Field) keys for each orbit slot. A BLF park key shows the status of its orbit at a glance: the LED is dark when the slot is empty, and lit (usually red or orange) when a call is parked there. To park, press the BLF key during a transfer — the call goes directly to that orbit. To retrieve, press the lit BLF key from any phone that has it programmed. Contact DVGVoIP to have BLF park keys provisioned on your phones.
Parking via the 3CX Web Client
In the 3CX web client, active calls display a Park button alongside the transfer and hold options. Click Park to open a panel showing available orbit slots. Occupied slots are highlighted so you can avoid parking a second call into an already-used orbit. Click an available slot to park. To retrieve, look for the parked call indicator in the calls panel and click Resume, or dial the retrieval code from a desk phone.
Orbit Timeout and Recall
A parked call will not wait indefinitely. After a configured timeout — typically between 3 and 5 minutes, depending on your system settings — the call will recall back to the extension that originally parked it. Your phone will ring again with the returning call. If the recall is not answered, the call may be routed to voicemail or a ring group depending on your configuration. Contact DVGVoIP if you need the timeout adjusted for your site.
Call Parking vs. Hold
Use standard hold when you will retrieve the call yourself within a short time from the same phone. Use call parking when you need a colleague to take the call, when you are moving to a different desk or phone, or when you want any available team member to be able to pick it up.
